As with teaching University Writing, I ground Technical and Professional Writing instruction in rhetorical considerations of audience, purpose, and context. Though it is essentially a genre course, I encourage students to also take into consideration material circumstances surrounding their documents, including the medium through which their documents will be delivered. This is especially prevalent in my instructions assignment, in which students are encouraged to experiment with delivery methods. Students have created everything from booklets to handouts to blog posts to videos. Their enthusiasm at being able to experiment is both contagious and evident in their final projects.
